| Researching Our Rivers |
Field research is alive and well in the state of Illinois, as evidenced by this month’s groundbreaking for a new field research station at the confluence of three major rivers in our state--the Mississippi, the Illinois and the Missouri.
The College of ACES is working in partnership with the Illinois Natural History Survey and Lewis and Clark Community College on the project.
The new field station, which will be located near Alton, is scheduled to be completed in 2009. The facility itself will be a model of 'green construction’, featuring renewable energy systems and internal recycling systems, and producing virtually no negative environmental impact.
In many respects this center represents the three words found in the name of our college, and which define our domains of interest--Agriculture, Consumers and the Environment.
Research conducted at this new facility will contribute to the body of scientific knowledge about river systems and will help inform both the public and policy makers about issues that relate to the health and sustainability of our rivers. Water and the river transport system are vital to Illinois agriculture, and agriculture can prosper long-term only if proper attention is given to sustaining the environment.
Ultimately, the outcomes of the scientific experiments conducted at this new facility will benefit not only the current citizens of Illinois, but also create an agriculture that can be sustained to meet the needs of future generations.
