DEPARTMENTAL DESCRIPTION:
The Department of Crop Sciences (http://www.cropsci.uiuc.edu/)
includes 38 faculty involved in research, teaching, and extension education programs, and hosts an additional 11 USDA-Agricultural Research Service scientists with zero-time faculty appointments. The department encompasses programs in plant pathology, biometry, crop production, environmental sciences, integrated pest management, plant breeding, genetics and cytogenetics, plant molecular biology and physiology, weed science, and entomology. Professional and support personnel number 140. The department is housed in four campus buildings and manages the Crop Sciences Research and Education Center, which is adjacent to the Urbana campus, and five outlying research centers. The department houses the USDA-ARS Soybean Germplasm Collection and the USDA-ARS Maize Genetics Cooperation Stock Center. Curricula are offered to approximately 100 undergraduate majors and 100 graduate students in M.S. and Ph.D. programs in various specializations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
A Ph.D. in crop sciences, plant pathology or another discipline complementary with departmental programs is required. The candidate must be tenurable at the rank of full professor, with a strong background in research, resident instruction and/or outreach education, as well as demonstrated administrative skills. The candidate must have strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, administrators, and clientele groups.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
The head of the Department of Crop Sciences is a full-time position responsible for the administration of the research, teaching, and extension programs of the department, specifically:
- Providing leadership to the faculty and staff
- Establishing goals and developing policy guidelines
- Supervising the teaching, research and extension programs in the
department
- Administering budgetary and financial matters within the department, including financial accounting, budget preparation, allocation of funds among departmental programs and personnel, and assisting in securing outside support
- Planning and implementing programs to enhance departmental research
and teaching facilities
- Maintaining liaisons with leaders in industry, government, other
universities, public groups, and professional societies
PROPOSED STARTING DATE:
The position will be filled as soon after October 1, 2004 as a suitable candidate is identified and available.
SALARY:
The salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
