The U of I Horticulture Club is planning to host more than 10,000 visitors at its 49th annual Mom's Day Flower Show on Saturday and Sunday, April 17 and 18, 2004.
Show hours are 9:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, in the U of I Stock Pavilion at 1402 W. Pennsylvania Avenue in Urbana, Illinois.
The theme of this year's show is Gardens of the Stars, and the show will feature garden interpretations of the movies The Wizard of Oz, Pirates of the Caribbean and Finding Nemo.
The public is invited to attend. Plants used in the displays, as well as other items, will be for sale. Proceeds will be used to fund educational opportunities for club members. The U of I Horticulture Club and the Mom's Day Flower Show are student-run.
Throughout the year, Horticulture Club members are given the chance to hear professional presentations, as well as participate in plant sales and horticultural therapy sessions, according to Kelly Allsup, Flower Show Chair. "We instill the skills needed to grow, design, advertise, engineer — and most of all, lead," Allsup said.
The goal of the show is to educate the public and inspire gardeners to use common plant materials in fresh, new ways. The club aims to complement the students' academic experience and enhance practical skills related to the field of horticulture.
