Laurie F. Kramer, professor of applied family studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, received a USDA-National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges Excellence in Teaching Award for 2004, one of two given in the North Central Region.
The award includes a $2,000 stipend to be used for the improvement of teaching at her college or university.
Kramer has taught in Human Development and Family Studies at Illinois since 1988. Revered by both the undergraduate and graduate students in her classes, she has worked to translate research and theory to meet the needs of real families while preparing her students for their future professional roles.
Kramer's work has had a deep impact on the larger community because of her educational, research, and outreach activities. As director of The Pampered Chef� Family Resiliency Program, she is responsible for overseeing a lecture series, faculty research grants, and student fellowships funded by the program. She co-chairs the Cross-Campus Initiative on Promoting Family Resiliency, which sponsors multidisciplinary collaborative projects aimed at enhancing the well-being of children and families.
The Excellence in College and University Teaching in the Food and Agricultural Sciences Awards Program was authorized by Congress in 1990. Nominees come from a wide spectrum of departments in agriculture, natural resources, veterinary science, and human sciences.
A selection committee of nationally recognized teachers and scholars chose eight regional and two national recipients of the teaching awards based on use of innovative teaching methodology, ability as classroom teachers, service to students and their profession, and scholarship.
Dr. C. Peter Magrath, president of the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges, said of the winners, "Their records of exemplary teaching and university service, coupled with sound scholarship, provide a most timely example of how university faculty members can effectively serve both the educational and professional needs of their institutions and the broader society."
The Honorable Joseph J. Jen, Undersecretary, Research, Education, and Economics, USDA presented the awards at the 117th annual meeting of the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges in San Diego, held November 14-16.
