Renewing a Partnership with Afghanistan

The signing of a document called a Memorandum of Understanding took place on Thursday, December 16 at 10 a.m. in the Heritage Room in the library of the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences. The signing itself lasted only about five minutes but it represents a relationship that began more than 20 years ago being renewed and will have significant and lasting effects on the agricultural community in Afghanistan for decades to come.

"This is a triangular agreement between the University of Illinois, Southern Illinois University and the university in Pakistan called the Northwest Frontier Province Agricultural Univerisity (NWFP-AU) which is located in Peshawar, just across the border from Afghanistan," said John Santas, associate director of ACES Global Connect, the international arm of the U of I. Santas is the U of I leader of this effort to help revitalize Afghanistan by building up the educational system in war-ravaged Afghanistan.

Abdul Qayyum Khan participated in the signing as a representative of NWFP-AU. He is the director of the U of I field office in Pakistan and Afghanistan. "Dr. Qayyum is vital to the success of the program. He coordinates the complicated logistics required to get qualified Afghan agriculturalists enrolled in training programs and offering short courses on agricultural topics. These Afghans take the information and share it with the other farmers in their villages, in much the same way our Illinois Extension educators do."

"One of the keys to successful development in Afghanistan is the growth of its agriculture sector where a large proportion of the people in Afghanistan earn their incomes," said Earl D. Kellogg, associate provost for international affairs at the University of Illinois. "The University of Illinois is pleased to be able to contribute to agricultural development in Afghanistan which is consistent with our public engagement mission and international involvement."

Plans are underway for several more short courses to be taught again at the university in Pakistan as well as at a university in the recovering Afghanistan city of Kabul.
