College of ACES Award Winners

Three professors in the University of Illinois College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences (ACES) received the college's top honor, the Paul A. Funk Recognition Award, Tuesday night during the annual awards banquet.

The Funk honorees were Donald P. Briskin of the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences; Darrel L. Good of the Department of Agricultural and Consumer Economics; and Marvin R. Paulsen of the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering.

The Spitze Land-Grant Professorial Career Excellence Award went to Schuyler S. Korban of the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences.

A number of other College of ACES awards were presented as well. Walter L. Hurley, Department of Animal Sciences, received the senior faculty award for excellence in teaching. The college faculty award for excellence in teaching went to Alan C. Hansen of the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering.

Richard A. Weinzierl, Department of Crop Sciences, received the senior faculty award for excellence in Extension. The college faculty award in that category went to Mohammad Babadoost of Crop Sciences.

Roderick I. Mackie, Department of Animal Sciences, received the senior faculty award for excellence in research. The college faculty award in that category went to Qin Zhang of Agricultural and Biological Engineering.

Winning the college's team award for excellence was the Pesticide Safety Education Program. Team members are: Patricia A. Bingaman, Jean L. Miles, Philip L. Nixon, and Michelle L. Wiesbrook, all of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences, and Scott M. Bretthauer, Agricultural and Biological Engineering, and Bruce E. Paulsrud, Crop Sciences.

Four College of ACES academic professionals were honored for excellence. Douglas G. Peterson of the News and Public Affairs section of Information Technology and Communications Services was honored for innovation and creativity. Philip L. Nixon, Crop Sciences, was honored for excellence in teaching and outreach and Robin A. Orr, U of I Extension, for sustained excellence in management. Ralph W. Esgar of Crop Sciences was honored for sustained excellence in research.

Staff awards for excellence were presented to Carol Preston, Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences, and Michael Vose, Department of Crop Sciences.

The Marcella M. Nance Staff Award was presented to Diane Frerichs, who is with the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition and U of I Extension.

Donald R. Ort, a scientist with the USDA's Agricultural Research Service, who works with the Department of Crop Sciences, received Service Recognition Award.

The Karl E. Gardner Outstanding Undergraduate Adviser Award went to Darrel J. Kesler of Animal Sciences.

Germán A. Bollero of Crop Sciences received the John Clyde and Henrietta Downey Spitler Teaching Award.

The Louis V. Logeman Graduate Student Teaching Award was presented to Denise Kennedy Kubose of the Department of Human and Community Development and Fernando E. Miguez of Crop Sciences.

David W. Crowder, Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences, won the graduate student research award for master's candidates and Ignacio R. Ipharraguerre, Animal Sciences, took the award for Ph.D. students.

A number of ACES Alumni Association Awards of Merit were also presented. Winners were: Dale E. Aupperle, Forsyth; Jack A. Cavanah, Granger, Iowa; Ivery D. Clifton, Winterville, Georgia; Carol A. Keiser, Champaign; and Piet Paul Van Waeyenberge, Dilbeek, Belgium.
