College Computer Recommendations

There are many ways to access computing equipment to meet your academic needs at the University of Illinois. These include having your own computer, using UIUC facilities, or both.

The campus (CITES, Housing), and the College of ACES strongly support the computing environment, making available an extensive array of computers for general-purpose academic usage.

In general, departments in the College of ACES do not require students to own their own computers. The information on this Web page is designed to serve as a suggested guide for new computer purchases by students in the College of ACES.

The recommended minimum configuration for new purchases by ACES students is as follows. This minimum configuration is a good investment and should serve you well through your undergraduate years without any additional upgrades to the hardware.

• Windows XP or Windows Vista operating system
• Pentium 4 or equivalent processor (2.3 Ghz)
• 2 GB memory
• 80 GB hard drive
• 10/100/1000 Ethernet card
• 802.11 b/g wireless card
• CD-RW/DVD drive 24x
• color monitor, flat panel LCD monitor
• Onsite maintenance contract
