Statewide Leadership Conference

Published: Apr. 13, 2006

URBANA-Sharing information about effective leadership skills will be the focus June 7 at the 8th Annual Statewide Leadership Conference, sponsored by University of Illinois Extension.

"This year's theme is 'Leadership in the Real World,'" explained Anne Silvis, U of I Extension community development specialist and conference organizer. "Developing the leadership skills to deal with the 'messiness' and uncertainty of the real world is critical to the success of communities, organizations, and agencies.

"This conference is designed for people who are in leadership positions or are working on community projects, and seek to manage community involvement in those projects more effectively."

The conference will be held in the Hawthorn Suites, Champaign. Topics on the agenda include homeland security, using community foundations to build community, facilitation, building consensus, cultural differences as a mirror of similarities, developing youth as leaders, and leading without power.

"At the conference, we'll focus on the principles and strategies that will enable us to refine and retool our thinking and our actions to fit the situation--whatever it might be and however it might change," Silvis said.

Mark Homan, an expert on community projects who has spent more than 20 years working in communities, teaching, and traveling, will be the featured speaker.

Registration is $75 per person and is limited to 175 persons and ends May 24. Registration can be completed on the Web at http://www.communitydevelopment.uiuc.edu . Further information can be obtained by contacting Silvis at (217) 333-5126, e-mail asilvis@uiuc.edu .
