New Workshop for ACES Faculty Emphasizes Global Online Collaboration
Published: Sep. 16, 2008
Faculty members from the College of ACES are being invited to participate in a first-of-its-kind global collaborative experience via a free workshop on Tuesday, October 28.
Concepts demonstrated at the workshop will then be followed on Thursday, October 30, by a fully online collaborative experience between ACES faculty and professors from a number of universities in Argentina, including National University of Mar el Plata, National University of Cordoba, National University of Rio Cuarto, National University of Cuyo, University Congreso, INTA (National Institute of Agriculture Technology), and CONICET (National Scientific and Technical Research Council).
"International Academic Collaboration Experience Via Online Interaction" will explore the potential of Web 2.0 tools to facilitate cooperative projects with faculty peers around the world. The workshop is being led by Manfredo Seufferheld, Assistant Professor in the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences, and Dr. Norma Scagnoli, eLearning Specialist, College of Business.
Seufferheld emphasizes that the workshop will focus primarily on teaching and research enhancements possible through online collaboration, and on the potential Web 2.0 holds for providing researchers and students with significant international academic interaction. No previous experience in the use of online real time technologies is required for participation.
The workshop will include examples of implementation and best practices by researchers and instructors from the University of Illinois. Sessions will be conducted in English, but translation services will also be provided so that comments and questions in Spanish can be accommodated.
The October 28 session will be held in the computer lab (Room 29) in the ACES Library, Information and Alumni Center (LIAC). Informal social time and light refreshments will last from noon until 12:30 p.m., followed by workshop sessions from 12:30-2:30 p.m. The 12:30-2:30 p.m. follow-up session on October 30 will be conducted entirely online, so participants have the option of either returning to Rm 29 in LIAC or logging on from their office computer or laptop.
"International Academic Collaboration Experience Via Online Interaction" is being sponsored by Academic Programs of the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences, in cooperation with the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies.
Although the workshop is being offered at no cost to participants, preregistration by October 15 is required. The workshop will be limited to the first 100 participants to register.
