U of I Humane Education Seminar examines bully breeds

Learn more about issues facing the "bully breeds" of dogs at the 2010 Humane Education Seminar hosted by the University of Illinois Department of Animal Sciences on Saturday, Feb. 20, at the U of I ACES Library.
Four national leaders will address issues surrounding today's most prolific breed types, which include the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier and Staffordshire Bull Terrier as well as other breeds and mixes. Speakers will discuss relevant legislation, approaches for animal care and control officials, and overall guidance on building safe and humane communities.
"This seminar is ideal for everyone in the animal welfare field, as well as community leaders who seek successful solutions to conflicts surrounding these breed types," said Amy Fischer, U of I Extension companion animal specialist.
Veterinarians and certified veterinary technicians can obtain up to 4.0 CEUs for attending the seminar.
In addition, participants will have the opportunity to review innovative humane education programs in a poster session in which five presenters will be selected to showcase programs designed to help communities better understand and address issues related to bully breeds.
Check-in begins at 8:15 a.m. The seminar will begin at 9 a.m. and conclude at 4:30 p.m.
